Plot summary
Corie Bratter and Paul Bratter start married life after a honeymoon at the Plaza Hotel and take a fifth-floor apartment in Greenwich Village with no elevator. Paul is a conservative young lawyer at the start of his career; Corie is a free spirit who enjoys doing the illogical. She decorates the small, leaky rooms. Their neighbor Victor Velasco keeps his quarters in the attic and gets there by climbing through the Bratters' window; he shows Corie how the heating and plumbing work. Corie's mother, Ethel Banks, is single and straight-laced, and Corie arranges a dinner for Paul, Ethel and Victor. Victor takes the group to an Albanian restaurant on Staten Island, where he and Corie dance alongside a belly dancer; Paul and Ethel look on.
