Biography
Barbra Streisand is an American entertainer whose work spans singing, songwriting, acting, writing and filmmaking. Born in Brooklyn, she started out in the early 1960s singing in nightclubs and on Broadway stages, which led to television appearances, and she signed with Columbia Records. Her first album, The Barbra Streisand Album (1963), earned the Grammy for Album of the Year. She turned to film, and her role in Funny Girl (1968) brought her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Other notable films include Hello, Dolly! (1969), What's Up, Doc? (1972) and The Way We Were (1973). She took a second Oscar for the love theme she composed for A Star Is Born (1976), the first woman honored as a composer. Yentl (1983) was a major studio film she wrote, produced, directed and starred in, a first for a woman. Her later directing credits include The Prince of Tides (1991) and, afterward, The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996).
