Kathryn Card
Biography
Kathryn Card was an American actress whose career took in radio, television, and film, and she was perhaps best known for playing Lucy's mother, Mrs. McGillicuddy, on I Love Lucy. Born in Butte, Montana, she spent the late 1930s in radio, appearing on Uncle Walter's Doghouse from 1939 to 1942 and as Grandma Barton in The Bartons. She also had roles on Just Neighbors, Helpmate, and The Woman in White. Her first screen credit came in 1945, as Louise in Kiss and Tell. Later films included Undercurrent (1946), The Reckless Moment (1949), Home Before Dark (1958), and, as her last, The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). She made her television debut on I Love Lucy in 1954, then played Mrs. McGillicuddy in episodes from 1954 to 1956 and again in 1959. Other credits included Perry Mason, The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, Make Room for Daddy, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Rawhide, and Wagon Train. She died in 1964.

A first
Warner Bros. cut Card's role from the film soon after it opened, and it stayed out until 1983, when film historian Ronald Haver located the original soundtrack and most of the missing footage and put the scenes back. Card's scene with James Mason survived on the soundtrack, so Haver used another actress as a stand-in to make stills.
