Plot summary
Dr. Stewart McIver has taken charge of a psychiatric institution that Dr. Douglas Devanal ran as medical director for many years. His patients include Steven Holte, an artist who may be suicidal, and the self-loathing Mr. Capp, and the work leaves his wife, Karen, feeling ignored. When the library needs drapes, the penny-pinching Victoria Inch orders unattractive ones; Karen buys a more expensive, colorful set instead, with the board chairman's approval but without telling her husband, and McIver lets the patients, mainly Steven, design and make their own. Dr. Devanal has a drinking problem and is involved with Miss Cobb, who works as his secretary, and he also makes a clumsy pass at Karen. McIver finds himself drawn to Meg Rinehart, a member of his staff, while Miss Inch plans to bring Devanal's conduct before the board.
