Plot summary
Daisy Gamble hears a telephone before it rings and has a way with flowers, but the habit she wants to break is cigarettes, and she wants to break it for Warren, her fiancé. Warren tells her what to wear and what to say, and he does not ask her opinion. Daisy attends a class taught by the psychiatrist Marc Chabot, is hypnotized without meaning to be, and then persuades him to treat her smoking with hypnotherapy. Under hypnosis she answers as Lady Melinda Winifred Waine Tentrees, a nineteenth-century coquette born to a kitchen maid out of wedlock, and Chabot comes to believe his patient is reliving an earlier life.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Paramount Pictures first planned the film as a nearly three-hour roadshow release, but executives made director Vincente Minnelli cut nearly an hour, among the deletions the Daisy-Warren duet "Wait Till We're Sixty-Five" and Marc's answer song "She Isn't You".
- Adapting his own stage play for the screen, Alan Jay Lerner renamed the Austrian therapist Mark Bruckner as the Frenchman Marc Chabot, changed Melinda's death from drowning at sea to unjust execution, and made it clear that Daisy really was Melinda reincarnated.
