John McGiver

Biography

John McGiver was an American character actor who appeared in more than a hundred television and film parts between 1955 and 1975. Born in Manhattan, he taught English and speech in the Bronx and acted and directed at New York's Irish Repertory Theater before turning to acting full time in 1955. His precise diction and Northeastern elite accent led audiences to take him for an Englishman, and he specialized in pompous Englishmen, aristocrats, and bureaucrats. He was best known for Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), Who's Minding the Store? (1963), Man's Favorite Sport? (1964), and Midnight Cowboy (1969), playing a wistful jewelry salesman in the first and Senator Jordan in the second. On television he appeared on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, The Patty Duke Show, Gilligan's Island, and Bewitched, and he made American Express commercials. His Broadway credits included A Thurber Carnival in 1960 and The Front Page from 1969 to 1970.
