Plot summary
The SS Happy Wanderer sets out from England on a cruise that visits Spain, Italy and North Africa before sailing home. Captain Crowther has five crew members replaced at short notice, and the men who arrive are useless at their work. He hopes the voyage will earn him the command of a transatlantic liner, and he assures the crew that a new captain will keep them employed. The passengers are a strange group: Glad Trimble and Flo Castle are single women traveling together, with Flo looking for a husband, Bridget Madderley entertains everyone around her, and one man spends the trip in the bar, drinking to forget a woman. The new chef, Wilfred Haines, discovers that the sea makes him ill.

- Charles Hawtrey was dropped from Carry On Cruising for demanding star billing and more money. He came back for the next film, and this was the only entry he missed in a run of 23 Carry On films.
- Joan Sims fell ill shortly before filming on Carry On Cruising began, and Dilys Laye was brought in to replace her at four days' notice. It was Laye's first appearance in the Carry On series.
- Lance Percival played the ship's chef in his only Carry On appearance, a part that had originally been intended for Charles Hawtrey.
