Plot summary
With Admiral Horatio Nelson's dying wish for a bigger navy, the Admiralty needs officers, so Albert Poop-Decker, unqualified after eight and a half years, is made a midshipman and ordered to HMS Venus at Plymouth. Before he reports, a tavern visit costs him his uniform, which serving maid Sally takes so she can reach the sea and find Roger, the lodger she once knew. A press gang gathers him up with Walter Sweetly, a cess pit cleaner, and the pair wake aboard the Venus, where Captain Fearless is in command, First Officer Jonathan Howett and bosun Mr. Angel run the crew, and a midshipman already answers to Poop-Decker's name. The ship sails for Spanish waters.
