Kenneth More
Biography
Kenneth More was an English actor who began as a stagehand at the Windmill Theatre before performing in its comedy routines. He won critical acclaim in Terence Rattigan's The Deep Blue Sea in 1952. He became a film star with the comedy Genevieve (1953) and Doctor in the House (1954), winning a BAFTA as best newcomer. Known for carefree and serious leading roles, he appeared in Reach for the Sky (1956), The Admirable Crichton (1957), A Night to Remember (1958), North West Frontier (1959), The 39 Steps (1959) and Sink the Bismarck! (1960). He won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for the 1955 film version of The Deep Blue Sea. After a career decline, he revived his popularity on television with The Forsyte Saga (1967) and Father Brown (1974), and later appeared in Scrooge (1970), The Slipper and the Rose (1976) and Unidentified Flying Oddball (1979). He was appointed a CBE in 1970 and died in 1982.

A role that slipped away
In 1960, John Davis, Rank's Managing Director, allowed More to act outside his contract in The Guns of Navarone. But More heckled and swore at Davis during a BAFTA dinner at the Dorchester, so David Niven got the role instead.
A role that slipped away
More turned down the lead in an adaptation of The Wind Cannot Read, a decision he later called the greatest mistake of his professional life; the 1958 film instead starred Dirk Bogarde.
Big break
While The Deep Blue Sea was running, director Henry Cornelius offered More £3,500 for one of the four leads in the comedy Genevieve, a part Guy Middleton had turned down. More said Cornelius cast him from his work in The Galloping Major, not the play.
Early training
In 1950 More had a stage hit, The Way Things Go, appearing with Ronald Squire. More later said that he picked up his stage technique from Squire.
