Plot summary
In London on Christmas Eve 1860, Ebenezer Scrooge runs his money-lending business, refuses his nephew's invitation to Christmas dinner, declines to give to charity and gives his clerk Bob Cratchit the day off under protest. Back at his rooms he is confronted by the ghost of Jacob Marley, his business partner seven years dead, who is weighed down by a chain he forged from his own greed. Marley warns that three spirits will visit Scrooge in the night. The first, the Ghost of Christmas Past, arrives at one o'clock and carries him back to his lonely school days and to the Christmas party of his old employer, Mr. Fezziwig.

- Richard Harris signed to make the film but was held up on filming Bloomfield; Rex Harrison was signed next, though the producer had to buy him out of a stage play, and when Finney read the script and wanted in, the filmmakers told Harrison they could not afford that buyout.
- In its sixth week at Radio City Music Hall it grossed $375,095, which Variety believed to be the biggest ever single week gross for a theater worldwide, surpassing the record set the previous Christmas by A Boy Named Charlie Brown.
- The posters for Scrooge carried the tagline "What the dickens have they done to Scrooge?", designed to head off any criticism of an all-singing, all-dancing old skinflint.
- Finney was in his mid-thirties when he played the elderly Scrooge, wearing makeup to look older and drawing on his theatrical training for the old miser's various vocal inflections and physical mannerisms.
- Tommy Steele took the stage version on a UK tour in 2003, reprised the role at the London Palladium in 2004 and played it there again from October 2012 to January 2013, making him the performer to have done the most shows at the Palladium.
