Ernest Clark
Biography
Ernest Clark was a British actor who worked in theater, television and film. Born in Maida Vale in 1912, he went from a newspaper job in Croydon to a repertory company, making his stage debut at the Festival Theatre in Cambridge in 1937. Six years of army service in the Second World War, during which he won the Military Cross, interrupted a stage career that later took him to the West End and to Broadway, where he appeared in Witness for the Prosecution in 1955. That year he also played Air Vice-Marshal Ralph Cochrane in The Dam Busters (1955). He became best known as Geoffrey Loftus, the short-tempered professor in Doctor in the House and the sequels that followed. He played a strict Dean from 1967 to 1969 in the BBC comedy All Gas and Gaiters, replacing John Barron. From 1969 to 1973 he was president of the actors' union Equity.
