Plot summary
Captain Edward Smith keeps the Titanic at a steady clip across the Atlantic on her maiden voyage, though ice warnings arrive from other steamers and one is cut off before it is fully read. In the telegraph room Jack Phillips and Harold Bride work through a pile of unsent messages. Second Officer Charles Lightoller stands his watch. First class passengers Sir Richard and Lady Richard listen to the band, the newlywed Clarkes travel in second class, and Pat Murphy, Martin Gallagher and James Farrel crowd the third class decks with a Polish girl and her mother. The Californian halts for field ice nearby. On the night of 14 April the lookouts spot an iceberg dead ahead.

- Producer MacQuitty traced his interest in the Titanic to childhood: as a boy of six he watched the ship's launch at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast on 31 May 1911, and saw it depart on its maiden voyage the following April.
- Producer MacQuitty had contracted with the Shaw, Savill & Albion Line to shoot aboard its former flagship, but the company pulled out at the last minute, saying it did not want one of its liners used to recreate the Titanic sinking.
- MacQuitty got permission from Ship Breaking Industries in Faslane, Scotland to film aboard a 1920s ocean liner the company was scrapping. The liner's port side had been demolished, so art students painted it in White Star Line colors and mirrors recreated the scenes set to port.
- There was no tank at Pinewood Studios big enough for the survivors struggling into lifeboats, so that was shot in the open-air swimming bath at Ruislip Lido at 2:00 a.m. on an icy November morning. When the extras refused to jump in, Kenneth More realized he had to set an example.
- When the tilting ship set creaked loudly enough for the microphones to pick it up, the director left the sound in the sinking scenes because it made them feel more real.
- Four clips from the Nazi propaganda film Titanic (1943) were used in A Night to Remember: two of the ship sailing in calm waters during the day, and two of a flooding walkway in the engine room.
- The American gambler Jay Yates, played by Ralph Michael, was never on board: Yates wrote the note said to have been handed to a passenger in New York and had a woman accomplice pose as a survivor and deliver it to the newspaper, so police would think him dead. He was captured a couple of months later.
