Plot summary
Prince Edward of Euphrania comes home after meeting Selena of Carolsveld, the princess his parents picked for him, and he refused to propose. He wants a marriage of love; his parents and the court want an alliance with a neighboring kingdom. The King is told such a match would help hold off war, and a ball is arranged so Edward can choose a bride. Edward dislikes the plan while his cousin Montague enjoys it. Word arrives that Carolsveld means to make war, and Edward gives in. Fewer princesses than expected accept the invitation, so the local nobility is asked as well, among them the stepmother and stepsisters of Cinderella, who has been banished to the cellar and set to work as their servant.

- Over 800 girls were considered for Cinderella and around 150 auditioned before Gemma Craven was chosen; director Bryan Forbes called her extraordinary.
- Bryan Forbes had just been handed The Slipper and the Rose project by David Frost when he rewrote the script in ten days.
- The scene where Cinderella sings "I Can't Forget the Melody" on a swing copies Jean-Honoré Fragonard's painting The Swing, with her costume and setting identical to it, down to the dress color and hat style.
- The songs "What Has Love Got to Do with Being Married" and "I Can't Forget the Melody" were cut from the film's initial US release and also left off the North American soundtrack LP.
- Margaret Lockwood, who plays the Wicked Stepmother, made her first feature film appearance since 1955 with The Slipper and the Rose.
