Plot summary
To prove that all men are equal, the Earl of Loam has his daughters receive the staff as guests at an afternoon tea. Lady Brocklehurst disapproves, and so does Crichton, the butler, who believes a servant should be content with his place. After Lady Catherine is arrested at a suffragette protest, Crichton suggests the family sail to the South Seas until the gossip fades. A storm wrecks the yacht's motors; Crichton returns for the sleeping maid Eliza, and the two are picked up by the boat meant for the upper class.

- Alexander Korda began trying to adapt the play in 1952 with Rex Harrison to star; by January 1956 he had optioned the rights to Mike Todd, who intended to produce it with Robert Newton and Cantinflas starring.
- Alexander Korda, who had actor Kenneth More under contract, convinced director Lewis Gilbert to make the film as a follow-up to Reach for the Sky. Korda died shortly afterwards, but Gilbert and More decided to proceed with the project.
- Although Douglas Gamley is credited with most of the film's score, Richard Addinsell supplied the uncredited original dance music, including a waltz, a polka and a galop. Those pieces were reconstructed, recorded and released on CD in 2003.
- The film became the 1964 stage musical Our Man Crichton, again starring Kenneth More. He was reluctant because he could not sing but agreed to it for £1,000 a week, and the show ran six months.
- Kryten, the waiter-like robot and one of the main characters in the science fiction comedy Red Dwarf, is a reference to Crichton.
