Plot summary
Aboard an ocean cruise, Sadie Patch quarrels with her parents, who fear fortune hunters, and with journalist Jimmy Carrol, whom she trips over. That night fog causes the liner to strike another ship, and only Sadie, Carrol, lecturer Professor Gibble and ship's stoker Pat Plunket get away in a lifeboat. The boat is wrecked on a reef off an island, and the four come ashore with a handful of supplies. Exploring, the men find no one else there. Because Sadie is the only woman among them, they agree not to court her and not to quarrel over her. Gibble distrusts Pat, doubting that a stoker from a lower-class background will keep to their gentlemen's agreement.
