Jack Gwillim
Biography
Jack Gwillim was an English character actor who entered the Royal Navy at 17, stayed for more than two decades, then trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and began his acting career in the 1950s. Born in Canterbury, Kent, he worked on stage at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford and the Old Vic, and in the West End and on Broadway, in classics and modern plays. His theater credits included The Merchant of Venice and a revival of My Fair Lady. He appeared in more than fifty films and television programs, usually war films or historical epics, and his military background and deep voice led to roles as soldiers and authority figures. His films included Sink the Bismarck! (1960), in which he played a warship captain, Jason and the Argonauts (1963), A Man for All Seasons (1966), Clash of the Titans (1981) and The Monster Squad (1987). He also recorded for Caedmon Shakespeare Records.
