Michael Bates
Biography
Michael Bates was a British actor whose career spanned film, television, radio and the stage. Born in Jhansi, in colonial India, he was sent to England as a child and later studied at Cambridge before serving in the Indian Army during the Second World War. In 1953 he appeared with the Stratford Festival in Canada, and he went on to play Shakespearean roles at Stratford and the Old Vic; in 1966 he played Inspector Truscott in the West End production of Joe Orton's Loot. On radio he voiced many characters in the BBC comedy The Navy Lark. He was best known for Field Marshal Montgomery in Patton (1970), Guard Barnes in A Clockwork Orange (1971), and parts in Bedazzled (1967) and Frenzy (1972). On television he played Cyril Blamire in Last of the Summer Wine and Rangi Ram in It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

Bates was cast as Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery in Patton partly because he bore a striking resemblance to him.
A change of course
Before turning to acting, Bates served in the Second World War as a major with the 3rd Battalion, The 9th Gurkha Rifles in the Burma Campaign, and was mentioned in dispatches in 1944.
Beyond film
On stage, Bates took Shakespearean parts at Stratford and the Old Vic, and in 1966 he made a big impression in the West End as Inspector Truscott in Joe Orton's Loot.
