Biography

Julie Christie is a British actress whose screen career began on British television, including the BBC serial A for Andromeda, and whose breakthrough came in Billy Liar (1963). Born in Chabua in 1940, she trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She won the Academy Award and BAFTA for Darling (1965) and became known internationally as Lara in Doctor Zhivago (1965). She received further Oscar nominations for McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) and Afterglow (1997), and for Away from Her (2006) she also won a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award. She appeared in Fahrenheit 451 (1966) and The Go-Between (1971). Don't Look Now (1973) brought a BAFTA nomination. Her comic work included Shampoo (1975) and Heaven Can Wait (1978), and she later played Gertrude in Hamlet (1996) and earned a BAFTA nomination for Finding Neverland (2004). BAFTA awarded her its Fellowship in 1997.

A role that slipped away
Christie was never a prolific actress, and even at her peak she declined many prominent film roles. Among them were Anne of the Thousand Days, They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, Nicholas and Alexandra, and Reds, parts that brought Oscar nominations to the actresses who took them.
Big break
Christie played an amoral model in Darling, also released in 1965. The part made her known internationally and led the singer Tony Christie to adopt his stage name from her.
