Plot summary
Beatrice is a journalist at a television network under a chief known only as The Boss. A recording arrives from Iceland, where her fiancé Jim has gone with a small production crew to investigate a Monster said to live there. Beatrice talks The Boss into sending her after him; the plane goes down and she is the only one who comes out of it alive. Walking again takes radical, painful surgery, and as she recovers she befriends Dr. Anna, who helps her reach the remote village. The villagers ply her with drink and set her out as an offering for the Monster, foul-mouthed and alcoholic, who longs to die and cannot be killed. He mentions Dr. Artaud, a scientist who once knew a way to end him.

- After No Such Thing was ill-received at the Cannes Film Festival, the studio demanded that Hal Hartley recut the film; Hartley refused, and executive producer Francis Ford Coppola supported him. The standoff, plus the September 11 attacks, strained the studio relationship.
- Hal Hartley said writing and directing No Such Thing was like coming "full circle for a filmmaker": early in his career he wrote a horror script that he later revised into a vampire film. That movie was never made, but No Such Thing mirrors its ideas.
