Plot summary
Dublin, around 1911. Protest against British rule is growing, and John Cassidy spends his days as a laborer and his nights writing pamphlets. He is an impoverished idealist, and the care of his family holds his ambitions back. He is caught up in the rowdy tramway-men strike and in the social injustices of Dublin life. He dawdles with Daisy Battles, a prostitute, and falls in love with Nora, a bookshop assistant who urges him toward writing. The pamphlets he writes stir riots in the city, and he wants the pen to do more for his own people than a fight.

- Rod Taylor took the lead in Young Cassidy after Sean Connery dropped out because of scheduling conflicts with the James Bond film Goldfinger, and Richard Harris had been attached to the part before Connery.
- John Ford began directing Young Cassidy but fell ill about two weeks into production and was replaced by Jack Cardiff, which held filming up for two weeks. Ford had already directed a 1936 film version of The Plough and the Stars.
- The playwright Seán O'Casey, whose life the film tells, read earlier drafts and approved both the script and Rod Taylor as the lead actor; production began in 1964 and renamed him John Cassidy for the film.
