Plot summary

Billy Fisher shares a house in Yorkshire with his parents and his grandmother, and works as a clerk for the undertaker Mr. Shadrack. At the office he is supposed to post a large shipment of advertising calendars, but he keeps the postage money instead. To escape the scolding at home, he retreats into Ambrosia, an imaginary country where he is a ruler and a military hero. He tells people that he will soon move to London to write for the comedian Danny Boon. He has proposed to two women, Barbara and Rita, and given each of them the same ring, while Liz, a former girlfriend who has come back from Doncaster, is the one who understands his imagination.
