Plot summary
Claudius, brother of the dead King Hamlet, has taken the Danish throne and married the widowed Queen Gertrude while her son Hamlet grieves. Denmark expects an attack from Norway, where Prince Fortinbras, son of the king the old Hamlet killed in battle, has gathered forces. On the ramparts of Elsinore, the sentries Bernardo and Marcellus have seen a figure that looks like the late king, and they bring Hamlet's friend Horatio to watch with them. Horatio tells the prince what they saw. The ghost speaks to Hamlet alone, saying that Claudius killed him and demanding revenge. Hamlet tells Horatio and the sentries that he intends to act mad and makes them swear to keep quiet about it. Polonius, the king's adviser, orders his daughter Ophelia to reject Hamlet's advances.
