Stanley Baxter
Biography
Stanley Baxter was a Scottish actor, comedian and impressionist who began performing as a child on the BBC's Children's Hour in Glasgow, the city where he grew up. After wartime service he spent three years at the Citizens' Theatre in Glasgow, then became a favorite of the city's variety and pantomime stages before moving to London for television work in 1959. His sketch and variety shows, among them The Stanley Baxter Show and The Stanley Baxter Picture Show, made his name through elaborate specials and impersonations, and he later took the title role in the children's series Mr Majeika. His films included The Fast Lady (1962), Crooks Anonymous (1962) and a voice part in the animated The Thief and the Cobbler (1993). He also wrote books drawing on Glasgow humor, and his honors included a lifetime achievement prize from the British Comedy Awards and a BAFTA Scotland award for his contribution to film and television.
