Plot summary
The 1970s in America brought a wave of questioning: political activism, protest, hedonism, the women's movement and the civil rights movement, along with a revolution in music. The period, known as New Hollywood, was a turning point for American cinema. Moviegoers wanted stories drawn from their own experience and turned away from old studio formulas. A new generation of filmmakers took their cue from foreign directors, among them Godard, Kurosawa and Fellini, and worked while the studio system was in trouble. Choosing their own material, they brought personal visions out of the studios. Today's filmmakers sit down with the influential directors of the era to talk about those years.
