Big break
Cornwell's major breakout came from voicing Gilbert the Alien, an improv-heavy puppet character, on the 1980s Saturday-morning kids show Get Fresh, which later spun off into Gilbert's Fridge, for which he was also a credited writer.
First role
Cornwell first appeared on television in 1980 as an episode presenter on the BBC youth program Something Else - Southend.
Behind the camera
Cornwell and fellow impressionist John Sessions were commissioned by the BBC in 1997 to produce the comedy vehicle Stella Street, which Cornwell wrote and performed in. He did parody impressions of famous actors and musicians, including narrator Michael Caine.
Languages
On BBC Radio 1's Steve Wright in the Afternoon show, Cornwell voiced Mick Jagger and David Bowie. He also acted and voiced many characters in TV shows, including Spitting Image.
A change of course
In 1996 Cornwell performed in a comedy spoof sketch advert for the Nissan Almera, imitating Martin Shaw's Doyle from The Professionals, with Ray Trickett playing Lewis Collins' Bodie.
