Life at the Top (1965) on Netflix

Plot summary

Joe Lampton is a successful executive in Warley, a mill town in northern England, married to the wealthy Susan and the father of two children. Ten years after he left his working-class background behind, his career has plateaued and he is disillusioned. His father-in-law Abe Brown, the town's mayor and a mill owner, insists that the children be sent to a private boarding school; Joe objects, and his son is unhappy about it too. At a sherry party in Abe's house, where Joe would rather be in the pub, he meets Norah, a television host. He sees his son off at the railway station, and that night his in-laws, not Joe, choose which carpet goes in his house.
