John Cairney
Biography
John Cairney was a Scottish actor whose work spanned stage, film and television. Born in Glasgow in 1930, he trained at the Royal Scottish Academy and became a notable Hamlet at the Citizens Theatre, while his Macbeth at the Edinburgh International Festival was also successful. He appeared in the British debut of Arthur Miller's The Crucible in 1954 and played King Humanity in Tyrone Guthrie's 1959 production of Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis. His films included A Night to Remember (1958), The Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Victim (1961) and Jason and the Argonauts (1963). He became associated with Robert Burns through the 1965 one-man show There Was A Man, which ran at the Traverse Theatre, was televised and recorded as an album. Later work included the 1968 television adaptation The Robert Burns Story, which he wrote and starred in, and the 1970s BBC Scotland drama Scotch on the Rocks. He died in 2023.
