The Lady Refuses (1931) on Netflix

Plot summary

Sir Gerald Courtney, a wealthy London nobleman, wants his son Russell to focus on his promising career in architecture instead of spending his evenings out. One night Russell goes reveling with Berthine Waller, a gold digger, rather than dine with his father. From a first-floor window Sir Gerald watches them leave, and then sees June, a destitute young woman near prostitution, cornered by police across the street. When she knocks at his door, he introduces her to the officers as the niece he was expecting. Over dinner she tells him her story, and he offers her a thousand pounds to keep Russell away from Berthine.
