Edgar Norton
Biography
Edgar Norton was an English-born American character actor whose career moved between the London and Broadway stage and Hollywood films, lasting through both the silent period and the coming of sound. He was born in Islington, London, in 1868. At eighteen he played the Hare in the first London staging of Alice in Wonderland in 1886, a production overseen by Lewis Carroll, who attended it several times. Norton spent roughly thirty years making films and appeared in at least ninety of them. The part most often singled out as his finest was Poole, Dr. Jekyll's butler in the 1931 movie Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; he had already been playing it in the theater from 1898, with Richard Mansfield as Jekyll. Edgar Norton died in 1953.
