Plot summary
In London, a secret society meets in Limehouse, and the lawyer Thaddeus Merrydew chairs it. When a member dies, his stake is divided among the survivors, and his widow gets nothing. James Murphy is found dead on a train, and his widow asks Sherlock Holmes for help in collecting the money from Merrydew. She brings a scrap of paper with a couplet from the rhyme Ten Little Indians that had come to her husband before he died. Holmes tells Dr. Watson that Merrydew has eluded him before. Eileen Forrester takes her late father's place in the society, and Merrydew tells her to put off her marriage to John Stanford. Captain Pyke bursts in, and a shot from a window kills him in front of her.
