Plot summary
Dr. Dulac stops Alice from leaving her husband Lawrence by telling her the life story of Madelon Claudet, a Frenchwoman. Larry Maynard, an American artist, persuades Madelon to run away with him, and he has to return to the United States because his father is sick. Madelon gives birth to a son. Her father presses her to marry Hubert, a farmer, but she will not give up her son, and Hubert and her father abandon her.

- After the film's first preview was panned by critics, producer Irving Thalberg brought in playwright Charles MacArthur, who was star Helen Hayes' husband, to doctor the script. MacArthur cut inconsequential characters and reframed the story as a flashback.
