Plot summary
John Davis reports on the war for an American paper, and when the fighting pushes him out of France he takes his wife, Nora, to London. She is pregnant, and he wants her back in Connecticut; she chooses to remain at his side. The war has left him worn down, and Nora doubts his conviction as a reporter. Walking through the rubble during the Blitz, John comes upon a desperate young boy. He returns home to word that Nora was hurt in the bombing and is in a hospital. She goes home to America, and John stays on, writing about the city's war orphans. At the orphanage he meets its director, Trudy Strauss, and Peter, the mute boy from the rubble, and then Margaret, who arrives from foster care.
