Plot summary

The Hammond family home has been under a curse since the Crusades, its members dying or taking their own lives under circumstances no one could explain. Twenty years after the last such casualty, a creature attacks two people, Oliver Hammond among them. Scotland Yard sends the scientist Robert Curtis and his sidekick Christy to Hammond Hall, where the townspeople put their faith in an old rhyme about a bane in the rocky lane. Curtis looks for a scientific explanation instead, and the house gives him slamming doors, clanking chains, a secret room that someone recently entered, and a dog-like statue in the Hammond crypt.
