Plot summary
He has broken out of a psychiatric hospital in Cape Town and reached England: Robert Griffin, a man with a claim on Sir Jasper and Lady Herrick, who he says left him behind in Africa after they found diamond fields together. He asks for his share of that fortune and for the hand of their daughter Julie. The couple drugs him and has him thrown out of the house; a cobbler named Herbert Higgins pulls him from the water and tries to blackmail the Herricks with what Griffin tells him. Griffin later comes to the home of Dr. Peter Drury, a scientist who has already made animals invisible with an experimental formula and needs a human subject. Griffin asks to be that subject, hoping invisibility will let him get even.
