Victor McLaglen

Biography

Victor McLaglen, born in 1886, was a British-American actor and boxer whose screen career ran from the early 1920s through the 1950s. He got his start after a film producer looking for a boxer cast him as the lead in The Call of the Road (1920), and he moved to Hollywood in 1925, where he became a popular character actor known for playing drunks and Irishmen. He appeared in The Unholy Three (1925), A Girl in Every Port (1928) and Dishonored (1931). John Ford cast him in The Informer (1935), a performance that brought him the Academy Award for Best Actor, and he became a fixture of the director's stock company, appearing alongside John Wayne in Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950). His role in The Quiet Man (1952) earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination, and 1960 brought a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Victor McLaglen had never acted before when a film producer spotted him at a sporting club and cast him as the lead in The Call of the Road in 1920.
A change of course
In a six-round exhibition at the Vancouver Athletic Club on 10 March 1909, McLaglen fought heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. It was Johnson's first bout since he won the title from Tommy Burns.

At 14, McLaglen ran away from home to enlist in the British Army, intending to fight in the Second Boer War. Instead he was posted to Windsor Castle with the Life Guards, and was forced out once his real age came to light.
Beyond film
McLaglen and Lowe took their What Price Glory? parts to radio, playing them again in Captain Flagg and Sergeant Quirt on the Blue Network and on NBC.
