Plot summary
Ronald finishes high school as its most brilliant scholar. In his graduation speech he argues that books matter more than athletics, offending most of the students and especially Jeff, a popular athlete. Mary, Ronald's sweetheart, rejects him. Ronald follows her to Clayton, a college the dean calls athlete-infested, hoping to impress her. At Clayton he tries out for baseball and track and field, but he is inept at both. He works as a soda jerk and a waiter, keeping the jobs secret from Mary. Mary has begun dating Jeff. Ronald keeps trying to win her attention while his studies suffer.
