Francis Ford
Biography
Francis Ford was an American actor, writer and director who belonged to the first wave of filmmakers in Hollywood and served as mentor to his younger brother, John Ford. Born in Portland, Maine, he entered the movie business in New York City, worked for the Star Film Company in San Antonio, and then moved to Los Angeles, where he directed and appeared in westerns for Thomas H. Ince. By 1912 he was directing alongside Ince, and he moved to Universal in 1913, where his serial Lucille Love, Girl of Mystery became the studio's first serial and The Broken Coin proved so popular that it was extended from fifteen to twenty-two episodes. In 1917 he started Fordart Films. From the late 1920s onward he worked for two decades as a grizzled character actor, often uncredited, appearing in James Whale's Frankenstein (1931) and in his brother's films The Informer (1935) and The Quiet Man (1952).
