Plot summary
Cyrus Wentworth heads a shipping company whose liner, the Wentworth Castle, caught fire and sank days earlier, with more than four hundred lives lost; the ship was also carrying an illicit shipment of Chinese bonds. When Wentworth is shot in his office, police arrest Dick Fleming, the son of a rival operator, who is engaged to Wentworth's daughter Cynthia and had just been thrown out of the office. Cynthia asks the detective James Lee Wong to investigate, and reporter Bobbie Logan, who doubts the arrest, brings him the case as well. Captain William Street made the arrest, and Wong takes up the inquiry.
