Plot summary
An archaeological team led by Dr. John Benton has come back from the Mongolian desert, where it opened the tomb of a Ming emperor. The tomb held a scroll telling of a Temple of Eternal Fire, said to hide an oil reserve of importance to China. Benton collapses in the middle of a public lecture on the expedition and dies, and the scroll is found missing from his safe. Captain Bill Street of the San Francisco police leads the homicide inquiry, and the members of the expedition, Benton's secretary Win Len and Benton's student, the researcher James Lee Wong, fall under suspicion. Street comes to trust Wong, and the two investigate together.
