Darren McGavin
Biography
Darren McGavin was an American actor who began as a set painter at Columbia Pictures before studying acting in New York and finding work on Broadway and in film. Born in Spokane, Washington, he originated roles in the 1954 Broadway productions My Three Angels and The Rainmaker, then appeared in Summertime and in The Man with the Golden Arm, both in 1955. On television he played the title character in Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer and starred in Riverboat, and he also played reporter Carl Kolchak in The Night Stalker (1972), The Night Strangler (1973) and the series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. His film credits included A Christmas Story (1983), Raw Deal (1986) and Billy Madison (1995). He directed the 1973 mystery Happy Mother's Day, Love George, won a CableACE Award for Clara and was nominated for an Emmy for Murphy Brown. He died in 2006.

A first
McGavin starred in the 1972 supernatural TV film The Night Stalker, playing a reporter who uncovers a modern-day vampire loose in Las Vegas. At that time it was the highest-rated made-for-TV movie ever.
A role that slipped away
After Martin and Lewis split, the part in The Delicate Delinquent that had been intended for Dean Martin went to McGavin; the film was Jerry Lewis's first without a partner.
Behind the camera
Before Kolchak: The Night Stalker went into production, McGavin stepped behind the camera for the first time. His 1973 directorial debut was the mystery Happy Mother's Day, Love George, with Cloris Leachman, Ron Howard and Bobby Darin starring.
First role
McGavin's Broadway work began in 1954. He appeared in My Three Angels and The Rainmaker, creating the title role in the latter opposite Geraldine Page.
A role that slipped away
Despite playing the shady bookie Gus Sands in the 1984 baseball film The Natural, McGavin went uncredited because of a contract dispute.
