Plot summary
A smuggling ring hides heroin in the luggage of American tourists traveling home from Asia, so the drugs pass through customs unnoticed. In San Francisco, a porter throws a stolen bag into a cab, and the driver, an addict in the ring's pay, strikes a police officer and crashes, drawing Lieutenant Ben Guthrie into the case. The killer Dancer, his mentor Julian and their driver Sandy McLain are sent to gather the contraband and leave it at Sutro's Museum inside an antique ship's binnacle, with orders from their contact Staples to be gone by 4:05 that afternoon. The head of the ring is known only as The Man.
