Jamie Farr
Biography
Jamie Farr is an American comedian and actor best known as Corporal Maxwell Klinger on the CBS sitcom MASH. He grew up in Toledo, Ohio, won an acting contest at 11, studied at the Pasadena Playhouse, and acted in bit parts including Blackboard Jungle (1955). He was a regular on The Red Skelton Show, and after Army service took guest roles and films including With Six You Get Eggroll (1968), Who's Minding the Mint? (1967) and No Time for Sergeants (1958). Hired for one day's work on MASH in 1972, he became a series regular in 1975 as the corporal whose comic attempts to win a discharge involved women's outfits. He reprised the part on AfterMASH, played the Sheik in The Cannonball Run (1981) and Cannonball Run II (1984), was nominated for an Emmy, and in 1985 was given a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. His Broadway debut came as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls.

Farr's first acting job came when he was 11 years old. He won two dollars in an acting competition held locally.
Big break
Farr was spotted by an MGM talent scout while training at the Pasadena Playhouse and was offered a screen test for Blackboard Jungle, in which he played Santini.
A first
Farr was the only member of the M*A*S*H cast to have served in Korea, and the dog tags Klinger wore were the actor's own, kept from his time in the service.
A role that slipped away
Farr made his Broadway debut as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls in the 1990s. He took over the part from Nathan Lane at the last minute, with just two weeks and a single full-cast rehearsal before opening.
A first
As Klinger, Farr wore dresses that Ginger Rogers and Betty Grable had worn before him. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History now owns two of those dresses.
