Debra Winger
Biography
Debra Winger is an American actress whose career began with television guest roles and supporting film parts, and whose first major screen role came in Thank God It's Friday (1978). Born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, she followed it with French Postcards (1979) and Urban Cowboy (1980), which brought her a BAFTA nomination and two Golden Globe nominations. She earned Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Terms of Endearment (1983), which won her the National Society of Film Critics Award, and Shadowlands (1993). Her other films include Cannery Row (1982), Legal Eagles (1986), Black Widow (1987), The Sheltering Sky (1990), A Dangerous Woman (1993), Forget Paris (1995) and Rachel Getting Married (2008). She starred in the Netflix series The Ranch from 2016 to 2020, made her Broadway debut in 2012 in David Mamet's The Anarchist, and in 2014 the Transilvania International Film Festival gave her a lifetime achievement award.

Winger got a part in A League of Their Own, but she left the film and Geena Davis took her place. Reports said Winger quit because she would not work with Madonna, who she felt was not a serious actress.

While taking a break from films, Winger played the female lead in Anton Chekhov's play Ivanov, staged by the American Repertory Theater between November 1999 and January 2000.

Winger took part in a 1995 television musical staging of the 1939 MGM film at Lincoln Center, The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True. She was the Wicked Witch of the West and the narrator called the Cyclone.

Winger served as co-executive producer on Gasland, a documentary that came out in 2010 and received an Academy Award nomination.
