Plot summary

Augustin Muganza is a captain in the Rwandan army and a moderate Hutu. He lives in Kigali with his Tutsi wife Jeanne, who works in a hospital, and their children, and he stays in touch with his brother Honoré, who has a job on Hutu Power radio. In 1994 the sharing of power between the Hutu government and the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front falls apart. The president's plane is shot down, the prime minister is killed the next morning, and soldiers and militiamen begin slaughtering Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Xavier, a fellow Hutu officer, takes shelter in Augustin's house. Augustin asks Honoré to help move his family to the Hôtel des Mille Collines, and remains behind with Xavier. A decade later Augustin teaches school, and Honoré, awaiting trial in Arusha, asks to see him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Sometimes in April (2005)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Unlike Hotel Rwanda, which was rated PG-13 and mostly implied its violence, this film shows the genocide more graphically, earning a TV-MA rating, and it was shot on location at real Kigali landmarks including the Hotel des Mille Collines and Sainte-Famille Church.
  • The story is intercut with scenes of Prudence Bushnell, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs for American President Bill Clinton, and her failed attempts to stop the genocide and to get the American government and public to acknowledge it.
  • Sometimes in April was one of the first large-scale dramas about the Rwandan genocide to actually be filmed in Rwanda itself.
  • The film debuted on HBO before being rebroadcast on PBS, where it was followed by a panel discussion led by journalist Jeff Greenfield.
  • The film's composer, Bruno Coulais, was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie, or Special, one of several awards for which the film was nominated.
