Plot summary
Kym Buchman is nine months sober when her rehab facility releases her for a few days so she can attend her older sister Rachel's wedding at the family home. Her father, Paul, keeps a close watch on her, and when he will not let her drive, she bikes to a drug test and a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. There she runs into Kieran, the best man, who also attends the meeting; at the house she meets Rachel's fiancé, Sidney. Kym learns that Rachel's friend Emma will serve as maid of honor instead of her, and the long rift between the sisters comes up again as relatives and friends fill the house for the weekend. Rachel and Kym's mother, Abby, is present too; she and Paul are divorced, and both have remarried.

- While filming a dramatic scene, Anne Hathaway complained that the live band was interfering with the mood; director Jonathan Demme responded, "Tell her to do something about it!" Hathaway then improvised the line "Can you tell them to knock it off?!" and another actor went off-screen to tell the band to stop.
- Jonathan Demme had musicians compose the score live on set instead of using traditionally scored music, reasoning that the wedding's characters, a music-industry father and a record-producer groom, would have non-stop live music all weekend, always in the next room, on the porch or in the garden.
- Demme's long takes, multiple moving cameras, improvisation and live music recorded at the same time as the dialogue made sound a challenge, so mixer Jeff Pullman miked the film "like an orchestra", multitrack recording with up to 12 tracks.
- Robyn Hitchcock's "Up To Our Nex", written for the film as "a voice in Kym's head", was filmed in one take at the wedding party, where he was spontaneously joined by hip-hop star Fab 5 Freddy and the dancehall singers Sister Carol, ElSaffar and Tawil.
- Jenny Lumet, a junior high school drama teacher and the daughter of director Sidney Lumet and granddaughter of Lena Horne, had written four earlier screenplays, but Rachel Getting Married was the first of hers to be produced.
