Plot summary

Three Americans from New York reach Oran, in French Algeria, in 1947: the artist Port Moresby, his wife Kit, and their friend George Tunner. The couple plan to stay a year or two, while Tunner expects to return home in a few weeks. Waiting for transport to a hotel, the three meet two English travelers, the travel writer Mrs. Lyle and her grown son Eric, who is always asking for credit and loans because she keeps him short of money. In the hotel bar an older man sits alone and watches them. Kit refuses Port's invitation to walk through the city and rebuffs his romantic advances; he leaves in anger and, through a pimp, visits a prostitute in a Berber encampment.
