Plot summary
In the 1950s, C. S. Lewis is a reserved, middle-aged bachelor teaching at Magdalen College, Oxford, and the author of the Chronicles of Narnia books. The married American poet Joy Davidman Gresham comes to England with her young son Douglas, and their first meeting is formal. The outspoken Gresham unsettles the habits of a university dominated by men, and Lewis's quiet life with his brother Warnie is disrupted. He does not yet know the circumstances of her troubled marriage.

- Barbra Streisand lobbied unsuccessfully to play Joy Davidman in Shadowlands, and director Richard Attenborough also considered Sally Field and Anjelica Huston before casting Debra Winger as the poet in February 1993.
- Sean Connery was reportedly attached to star as C. S. Lewis in the film adaptation, which at that point was scheduled to begin production in late 1991.
- Anthony Hopkins was shown the script by Richard Attenborough while the two worked on the 1992 film Chaplin; Attenborough had been aboard as only a producer while Sydney Pollack was still directing.
- On their honeymoon in the film, C. S. Lewis and Joy Davidman search for the "Golden Valley" in Herefordshire, England, as shown in a painting in Lewis' study; in reality and in the stage play the couple honeymooned in Greece.
