Plot summary
Chelsea Deardon, a performance artist, is accused of trying to steal a painting owned by the millionaire Robert Forrester. She says the canvas is hers, a gift from her father, the artist Sebastian Deardon, for her eighth birthday, on the day a fire took him and nearly all of his paintings. Her attorney, Laura Kelly, approaches Tom Logan, an assistant district attorney in Manhattan with his sights on the top job, and turns up with Chelsea at the dinner held to launch his candidacy, pressing him into the case. Forrester then drops the charge, and the painting reaches the gallery curator Victor Taft, an associate of Sebastian Deardon who, like Forrester, has no wish to see Chelsea prosecuted.
