Plot summary
Jonas Nightengale makes his living as a faith healer, staging miracles with his manager Jane Larson and their crew and collecting money from the crowds at his revival meetings. Their truck breaks down in Rustwater, Kansas, a small farming town in the middle of a long drought, and the replacement parts will take four days to arrive. Jonas decides to hold revival meetings there to cover the cost of the repairs. Sheriff Will Braverman is skeptical of the visitor and tries to keep the town from being conned. Marva, a diner waitress, has a brother, Boyd, who walks with crutches after an auto accident; doctors found nothing physically wrong with him, and he believes Jonas can make him walk again.
