Plot summary
Betty Parrish works as a bank teller in West Los Angeles. She spends one night with Mike Chuhutsky, a tennis instructor who says he will call again and does not. Tennis does not pay for the Brentwood house he has taken, so he sells drugs on the side. A year or so on, he waves her down on Sunset Boulevard and asks for a ride, saying that other dealers are after him for moving in on their ground. She leaves him at a house up Doheny Drive. They talk mostly by telephone, and the meetings he arranges fall through.

- After disastrous preview screenings in January 1983, Warner Bros. made James Bridges re-cut the film from a reverse-chronology told from Betty's subjective view into a chronological story, removing flashbacks and Betty's fantasy sequences; Bridges shot extra scenes expanding Pete's role and replaced the score with one by John Barry.
